Learning about Diwali in Reception

We talked about Diwali, the Hindu and Sikh celebration of light. The children enjoyed looking at the artefacts and dressing up in traditional clothes. We thought about how different people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways. We learnt that Hindus and Sikhs spring clean their homes ready for Diwali which happens in October or November each year. It is a time to forget the past and look forward to the future and is spent with families and friends, giving presents, cards and sweets. People wear new clothes and have family meals with special food. Prayers are said at home and at the temple to remember the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. Homes are decorated with diva lamps (candles) and brightly coloured Rangoli patterns to remember the lights that guided Rama and Sita home. The streets are light and people enjoy fireworks displays. We talked about the similarities between Diwali and Christmas, New Year and Bonfire Night.
