Anzac Parade

Year 6 were part of the South Tyneside Anzac Parade on Monday. They laid a wreath and took part in a Remembrance Ceremony as part of Anzac Day. This is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand. It is to honour those who served in the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War. John Simpson Kirkpatrick was a stretcher bearer. He used donkeys to provide first aid and carry the wounded soldiers to the beach where they could be evacuated. He continued his work under fire until he was killed. Simpson and his donkey have become part of the Anzac legend. He was from South Shields and so it is important to remember him on this day.On Friday the Key Stage 2 children will have an assembly led by the Durham Light Infantry about him.
