During the autumn term, Year 1 enjoyed learning about the ‘History of Toys’ and how toys have changed over the years. We spent a lot of time discussing ‘the past’ and what this means. We looked at toys from the Victorian times as well as the 20th and 21st Century, including toys that our parents and grandparents would have played with and compared these to our toys today. It was interesting to see many similarities between toys from the past and the toys that we play with. We were fortunate to access artefacts from The Discovery Museum which brought our learning to life, allowing children the opportunity to handle and see first-hand toys from the Victorian era. Thank you to those families who provided photographs of themselves and family members playing with toys, and for the homework contributions which enhanced the children’s learning. Our unit ended with the creation of a ‘Toy Museum’, where toys and information were placed in chronological order along our display.
