Year 3- The “Treasure” Programme with Artist Teresa Poulton and The Great North Museum: Hancock
Year 3 have been invited to take part in an exciting new project! Working with ‘The Great North Museum: Hancock,’ they will be visiting the museum, collaborating with an artist and using a range of cross-curricular skills from history and art to geography and English.
The central element of the programme is a major exhibition, titled “Treasure: Hidden, Lost, Found”, running from late March to late September 2026. This exhibition features significant archaeological finds from across the North of England, including Roman coins, Viking Age silver, and Tudor coins, with loans from institutions like the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland.
The project aims to be community-led, involving local people in exploring the meaning of treasure and challenging traditional narratives around museum collections.
Key aspects of the initiative include:
Main Exhibition: An exhibition space on the first floor exploring the archaeological history of the North East, the complex questions of ownership, and the role of finds in shaping shared heritage.
Family-Oriented Space: A more playful, interactive space designed for family audiences.
Educational Activities: A schools project involving an artist facilitator working with local schools to create collaborative artworks based on the theme of “treasure” for display in the museum.
Community Engagement: Involving community members to provide fresh perspectives and stories about the museum’s objects.
The project highlights that “treasure” can mean many things—culturally, historically, and personally—and encourages visitors to reflect on these ideas.
The project will culminate in the children creating a piece of artwork, which will be displayed at the museum. A 3D copy is also going to be provided for our school to keep. Look out for more information soon!
