Black History Month – Walter Tull

Y5 have been gathering evidence from different sources about Walter Tull today to answer the question as to whether he was a significant person. They found out all about his early life, his footballing career and how he joined the army. He faced a lot of challenges being from African descent, and losing his mother and father by the age of 9, but he didn’t let that stand in his way. He was a good footballer playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town and was the first footballer from Northampton Town to join the Football Battalion. He became aΒ second lieutenant and the first black man in the British army to hold such a rank. He was sadly killed in action on 25 March 1918.
