Learning about Space in Year 5

Year 5’s new science topic is space. In the last few weeks they have been learning about the Solar System and the Earth and Moon.

During the first week they looked at the planets in our solar system and found out information about their size and distance from the sun; ordering the planets; classifying them as rocky planets or gas giants and finding out whether they were totally spherical or not. They even made their own planets and Sun and put them at their relative distances to see how big our solar system really is.

This week in Science, they explored why we have day and night on Earth using a globe and torch and why it is cyclical and they also looked at the Moon’s orbit around the Earth and the phases of the moon.
