Yesterday our NFL flag team were back in action at Longbenton sports ground. Following qualification from the South Tyneside competition, you may remember they then went on to win the Tyne and Wear County final. This meant they then had to play in the North East Regional finals where teams who had won their own County event came together. Which included schools from Yorkshire and Northumberland amongst others.
The prize at stake. A place in the National finals. Which last year was held at Wembley.
The team were outstanding from the off. You could really see how hard they’d worked in practice and how much effort they’d put in to memorising plays and different ways in which to score points.
After the 4 group games they had a 100% record winning all 4 matches.
With top of the table cemented they looked forward to a semi final against a team they had already played and beaten. And dreams of Wembley were definitely on.
However, as sometimes happens with sport you need a bit of luck to go with the skill and talent. And after suffering a defeat by 1 touchdown luck wasn’t on our side. And with the defeat the Wembley dream also went. However in a fantastic show of resilience, the team re-grouped to win a 3rd and 4th placed play off game. Meaning they finished 3rd best team in the whole region.
Words can’t cover how proud and impressed we are as a school with the group and I truly believe with a little bit of luck there would have been a trip to Wembley!! Well done you should all be super proud of what you’ve achieved in NFL.
In addition the referees and coaches/teachers came together and agreed that, Darcey was the MVP of the tournament! An amazing individual achievement for Darcey. Well done you !!!
