The Intent, implementation and Impact of our Curriculum β Physical education
At Lord Blyton primary we believe that having a high standard and enjoyable physical education programme, in a safe, supportive, compassionate environment, is vitally important in promoting the best physical and emotional development in all pupils. We aim to provide a wide range of sporting experiences, increasing their fun and enjoyment in safe and secure environments. Through teaching a broad and balanced physical education curriculum, we aim for all our children to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children with the installation of skills needed for them to secure personal knowledge to make healthy lifestyle choices. We aim to inspire children to lead an active lifestyle at Lord Blyton, and through PE they will learn key skills that will not only assist their physical development but also their personal development. Key skills such as: teamwork, leadership, self-discipline and resilience. At Lord Blyton we aim for enjoyment for all in PE and sport and giving the children the tools to succeed in physical activity and achieving their full potential. We aim to increase attainment and participation in PE and sport both in and out of school.
We aim for our children to have they have the physical literacy skills needed to maintain and then continue a healthy active lifestyle during their time at Lord Blyton and beyond. We aim to do this by being constantly inclusive, engaging and delivering curriculum lessons and extra curricular clubs to show this. This will also coincide with the partnership of the school games network offer that encourages participation and competition for all. Competition will also take place on an intra school basis throughout the academic year.
At Lord Blyton we are always striving to deliver high quality teaching across the curriculum and in extra curricular offers. We aim to enable our children to access opportunities allowing them the possibility of achieving their full potential and that within their own ability all of our children can achieve success personal to them.
We strongly value that through PE and sport our children get the opportunity to develop their self-worth and self confidence. Traits that are imperative for the personal development of our pupils at Lord Blyton.
All of our children are provided with opportunities to experience and engage in competitions at a range of levels. This can include competitions within school and out of school as part of a wider community event. By participating in these events we hope our children will see the benefits of participating in competition and how it can positively affect them physically, socially and emotionally.
Through the PE curriculum we allow children to have access to a wide range of skills and knowledge supported through a range of sporting activities. From this children can gain and maintain a good attitude within a sporting environment as well as an enhancement of self-confidence and resilience. Like all schools we receive the Sport premium money which is currently being used for CPD opportunities, qualified sports coaches will be used allowing for current staff to be upskilled by them in their field. We use a PE scheme to support staff teaching PE and this offers a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum so that all children of all abilities have equal access and can all be challenged at level suitable to them.
At Lord Blyton we strongly believe in the positive impact PE and sport has on our children both at primary school level and then beyond. We will continue to maximise all opportunities given to us by the partnership we have with the School Games Network and strongly support the government in their decision to extend the Sport Premium offer. This will act as a catalyst maintain a high quality PE offering at Lord Blyton, allowing our children to continue to access fun, engaging and competition events.
Intent
At Lord Blyton we strongly believe in PE and sport for all regardless of ability and background. All of our children have access to the same broad and balanced curriculum. Get Set for PE provides the main focuses for lessons and supports our staff with delivery. Through all aspects of PE and extra curricular delivery we aim to inspire our children to succeed and achieve their personal potential. It is out intent that:
- Children are taught and can apply the fundamental skills and movements in each lesson.
- Children will master basic movements such as jumping, running, catching, throwing, agility, coordination in isolation and in combination across the PE curriculum.
- Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics].
- Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
- Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
- Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
- They are physically active in each lesson and are motivated to reach their optimum physical and emotional development.
- They understand the values of teamwork and can collaborate effectively with others in a fair and cooperative manner.
- Pupils can practise and deploy their skills in a range of sports and activities, both individually and in teams, and be able to adapt these in different situations.
- Pupils have access to a wide range of sports within school, delivered by highly trained staff and external sports coaches.
- Children are offered access to a range of after-school sports clubs, including those activities not delivered through the national curriculum.
- The teaching of physical education is effectively differentiated according to pupilsβ needs, with equal opportunities in terms of resources, facilities and access to extra-curricular activities.
- Pupils observe their own and othersβ work, arriving at reasoned judgements to improve performance.
- Pupils become highly-skilled young leaders, organising individual and team sports within the school, and promoting sporting attitudes in others.
- Children are the most important part of lessons and have a voice in how the PE curriculum is both shaped and delivered.
- All pupils participate in competitive sport, both inside and out of the school, ensuring they do their best and display the skills of sportsmanship and self-discipline.
- Pupils have a clear understanding of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle and are aware of how a balanced diet and regular exercise contribute towards this.
- Sports Premium Funding is utilised effectively setting a strong foundation for their PE journey.
- All children should aspire to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25m.
- PE specialist staff to deliver the PE curriculum to ensure delivery is confident thorough and challenging.
Implementation
All children at Lord Blyton are taught curriculum PE by high quality current staff including a PE specialist. The teaching of PE in our school is implemented in the following ways:
- Children learn through a range of sporting activities, including invasion games, ball games, field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor adventure.
- All pupils in the school have equal access in terms of curriculum and extra-curricular. They will all be able to use facilities, equipment and other resources.
- Children are encouraged to participate in competitive and participation events within South Tyneside. These events enhance the development of teamwork, leadership and resilience.
- All pupils are offered the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activities and sports clubs, delivered by both staff and highly-trained sports coaches.
- Children are given a wide range of opportunities to build character and personal development through NSSW, sports day and other school sports events across the year.
- All sporting success is celebrated in whole-school assemblies, the school website, our social media and during the leavers assembly at the end of the year.
- An element of the Sport Premium funding is utilised to engage the less willing participants through our School Council and Young carers groups who can access other sporting settings outside of the School games and internal offer.
- All teachers are encouraged to promote active learning to promote being active for 60 minutes a day.
Impact
At Lord Blyton we aim to strongly implement all of the skills learnt in PE so the children can be motivated to maintain a happy healthy lifestyle through their Lord Blyton journey and beyond.
We want our children to be able to independently develop alongside the use of PE curriculum and achieve their personal best in everything they do not exhaustive of PE and sport.
At Lord Blyton we monitor their progress if physical education in these ways:
- Constant verbal feedback is given during lessons both positively and constructively in order to enhance pupil performance and understanding.
- Children become engaged sufficiently where they can peer and self review within lessons.
- Children will increase their subject vocabulary due to the wide range of subject knowledge they will have access to.
- Pupils will be set challenges in order to encourage them to achieve their personal best.
- The impact of swimming will be measured by a qualified swim instructor and based on those who can swim 25m by the end or before the end of KS2.
- Children will have an understanding of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle and take this knowledge into their wider community lives.
- Children will see PE and sport as a positive part of their education and will actively want to participate in extra curricular offerings.
- Children have access and will actively seek members of staff to discuss their mental well-being.
- Due to the strong importance set on PE at Lord Blyton, parents and families will be encouraged to be involved at appropriate times. As well as being regularly informed of success the children are having within the subject.
- Strong emphasis put on reward and acknowledgment due to the encouragement of a love of sport, PE and physical and mental well being.
- Children to have the best chance of living and maintain happy, healthy lives.
