Learning About Diwali in Reception

Today in Reception we have had lots of fun learning about Diwali, the Hindu and Sikh festival of Light which takes place in Autumn. We talked about the similarities and differences to the celebration of Christmas and learnt that during Diwali families and friends share time together, enjoy special food, receive gifts and sweets and wear new clothes. They decorate their homes with Rangoli patterns and little diva lamps and have fireworks at night time. Hindus worship lots of different gods during Diwali at the temple. The children enjoyed looking at artefacts and making their own Rangoli patterns using chalk and in the playdough and maths table with different shapes. This afternoon we read the story of Rama and Sita which we acted out with puppets. We then tried lots of different foods some of which we had never tasted before such as popadoms naan bread onion lbhajis, pakoras and samosas. We noticed that some of the food was spicy and had different flavours. Our favourite was the naan bread and we weren’t so keen on the onion bhajis!!!
